Born in Ofoase, Ashanti Region, in 1939, K. Frimpong began performing professionally in the early 1950s before rising to national prominence in the 1970s. With his distinctively warm tenor and sharp compositional sense, Frimpong helped push highlife into new terrain—incorporating elements of soul, jazz, funk and layered arrangements without losing the genre’s signature rhythmic drive and emotional directness. This is music that stands tall within the global canon of 1970s soul and jazz — rooted in highlife, but reaching far beyond it. It is music that holds its own alongside both the symphonic soul of American contemporaries like The Dramatics, and the afrocentric jazz fusions of Cymande and the Headhunters. The rhythmic engine is highlife; the emotional register is soul; the ambition is unmistakably Frimpong’s. The blue and black albums will be released individually on standard black vinyl LP for the first time in over 15 years, alongside a CD edition featuring both albums in full. All physical formats are out September 26, 2025. Moving between introspective, spiritual modes and more uptempo grooves, this is the pinnacle of the golden age of highlife.
