Guitar-Boy Superstar is the first survey of the long career of the legendary Nigerian musician, artist and poet Victor Uwaifo. This collection of music goes back to the early 70s and has re-awakened fans in the west to a sublime talent who is now widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s forgotten stars.
The album focuses on a unique style of highlife music that Uwaifo called ‘Ekassa’ – based on ancient rhythms and fused with modern highlife instrumentation and a dash of rock and soul.
Cutting his musical teeth with Victor Olaiya (‘the evil genius of highlife’) in the early 60s, Uwaifo went on to form his own band - The Melody Maestros, producing one of Nigeria’s biggest ever selling records called Joromi in 1965 for which he was awarded Africa’s first Gold disc.
“Another excellent dollop of Nigerian guitar from the ever reliable Soundway label” 4/5 GUARDIAN (UK)
“A fascinating collection of Victor’s music” Charlie Gillet BBC RADIO 3 (UK)
