Born and raised in New Zealand but schooled in London, Flamingo Pier may well be the southern hemisphere’s best kept secret.

Now in full Northern Hemisphere summertime mode, their American and European tour is accompanied by an EP of newly minted tracks which sit at the faultline of disco, boogie and house. Earworm guitar hooks and bubbling bass lines are complemented with tropical flourishes, as the group channels a wide array of influences: Masters At Work, Khruangbin, Prince, Ron Trent.

Shot through with sunshine and festival-friendly joy, their roots are in the gritty environs of Hackney Wick, formerly a somewhat desolate spot in the East End of London that has recently been revived by a new generation of creatives including Luke, Brad and Dom. “We were all living in this warehouse in Hackney Wick and started DJing with each other at home and playing music together,” says Luke. “Originally, Brad was over as part of another band who’d been brought over by a record label. But we had Counter Café as this incredible little spot on the canal there.”

Lead single ‘Mazunte’ is anchored in Patrice Rushen-style boogie handclaps, rippling bass and catchy horns. It’s an essential summer tune, written by the group while spending time in the sun-drenched surf town of the same name on the coast of Oaxaca, Mexico.
